Roleplaying game designer Erick Wujcik passed away Saturday evening, June 7, 2008. He died from complications related to pancreatic and liver cancer.
Two products define Erick's design career. He wrote the TMNT RPG for Palladium, and the Amber Diceless RPG which he published himself (as Phage Press). While I hold the TMNT game in high regard, I've played a lot of Amber Diceless in the past 15 years.
Following the deaths of Gary Gygax (one of the primary creators of D&D) and Bob Bledsaw (the principal of Judges Guild) in 2007, this is quite a blow to the hobby.

The Pledge - Update May 2008
May numbers:
Bought (136)
-66 GW Empire
-2 GW Bretonnians (plastic archers)
-4 GW High Elf Phoenix Guard
-19 Battletech mechs
-6 Battletech vehicles
-1 wrecked GW Land Raider for terrain or orks
-5 Blue Moon Plutonian Infantry
-8 Warmachine/Hordes (3x Cygnar Stormsmiths, 2x Cryx Satyxis, 1 Menoth Vassal, 2 Skorne Beast Handlers)
-4 Dark Age Forsaken (Nathaniel, Orchid, 2x Haniel)
-1 Dark Age Skarrd (Abomiation)
-1 Mekton mini (conversion?)
-3 Foundry Mercenary Orcs
-4 plastic unnamed robots
-5 GW Assault Marines
-1 CAV RMI Bishop
-2 Wargods Harbingers (Horus/Def., Khanum)
-1 Countess Games Cleric of Helios
-3 Gamezone Empire Pikemen
SOLD (10)
Primered (57)
Painting Progress (18)
Finished (47)
-10 GW Empire (10 Handgunners)
-5 Battletech Inf
-17 Battletech mechs
-10 Battletech vehicles
-2 JR 1/300 Storage bldgs
-3 plastic unnamed robots (based and painted for Battletech)
This brings the YTD numbers to
Net Growth: +165
Painted: 123
165 growth/152 days = 1.085 minis per day.
123 painted/165 bought = 74.5% of growth painted.
Which is ahead of both Pledge goals (<1.5 per day, >50% painted), though I am sliding…
Project progress was limited. The Battletech project goal is going decidedly sideways, with expansion of the collection keeping up with the completed rate. I feel critical mass approaching, however, so the expansion is all but complete.
The big Warhammer Empire purchase was a bargain I couldn't pass up, and accounts for half of May's growth. The miniatures are being processed for conversion and/or sell-off, however, so they will be departing the collection again at some point, maybe sooner than later…
Looking to get attention in June are the Warhammer and Dark Age goals, as well as Battletech. I may also add a bit more to the Warmachine finished collection, as there are several items there hovering near completion.

The Pledge
Plain and simple, I have a huge pile of miniatures to paint, and I keep buying more. Last year, I resolved to take two steps along the path to dealing with this "problem". First, I began tracking purchases, and secondly I began to paint more. The first step was facilitated by what The Miniatures Page (http://theminiaturespage.com/) calls "The Pledge", as I began not only keeping track, but posting my monthly purchases, as well as painting progress and items finished.
My FLGS helped with this second step, as I've found that I am far more productive when surrounded by gamer chatter.
With a fairly astounding purchase total in 2007, I resolved to actually limit my purchases in 2008, and try to sell off stuff I wasn't going to ever get to. In my case "limit" means keeping collection growth down to about 500 or so for the year, and painting half of that.
My Pledge posts on TMP continue, but I've decided to echo them here, starting with the May 2008 post.
