The Pledge - September 2008

September numbers:
(Bought, sold, and primed numbers stand alone, while the progress and finished lists are mutually exclusive)

Bought (44)
-2 Battletech (Hatchetman, Shadowhawk)
-3 GW Empire (Teutogen Guard Command)
-1 GW Dark Elf (Assassin)
-1 GW Goblin Squig Hopper
-1 GW Night Goblin Shaman
-1 GW Grey Knight Terminator (oooold)
-1 GW Space Marine Dreadnought (Black Reach)
-2 Mag Egos Levitating Disks
-2 Countess Games (Diplomat, Preistess of Selene)
-1 Warmachine Cygnar (Arlan Strangeways)
-1 Warmachine Khador (Yuri the Axe)
-1 Hordes Trollblood (Slag Troll)
-3 Hordes Skorne (Venator Catapult and crew)
-11 GW Dogs of War (11 Leopolds Leopard Company)
-13 GW Chaos Dwarf Hobgoblins (7 Wolfriders, 6 Bolthrowers with crew (2 sets))

SOLD (12)

Primered (44)

Painting Progress (42)
(the 15mm Saxons once again got attention, but none of them reached completion this month. Harumph Harumph!)

Finished (7)
-1 GW Goblin Squig Hopper
-2 Battletech (Demolisher II, Firestarter)
-2 Hordes Trollbloods (Grissel, Fell Caller)
-1 Reaper Half-Ogre Barbarian
-1 Rackham Wolfen

This brings the YTD numbers to
Net Growth: +479
Painted: 270

479 growth/274 days = 1.748 minis per day.
270 painted/479 bought = 56.4% of growth painted.

This remains behind the purchase goal (<1.5 per day) and is still barely ahead of the painting goal (>50% painted). The purchase ratio is improved from last month, however.

Existing project progress was again limited. Warmachine and Battletech saw a couple miniatures completed, while the FoW project moved forward "in progress". Nothing else moved.

The 15mm WAB project MUST continue to dominate the "working on" numbers next month (as they did this month, being 24 of the "Progress" minis), or they'll be hauting me into next year…

The convention at the beginning of September accounted for almost two thirds of September's purchase total. Not counted are a few goblinoids that were either passed along to others immediately or are already on the pile for the next flea market.

-1 Minotaur of Ptolus

This brings the YTD numbers to
Net Growth: +435
Painted: 263

435 growth/244 days = 1.783 minis per day.
263 painted/435 bought = 60.5% of growth painted.

Which is behind the purchase goal (<1.5 per day) but still barely ahead of the painting goal (>50% painted). Both are improved from last month, however.

Existing project progress was limited. Warmachine and Battletech projects moved slowly forward, while nothing else moved.

The 15mm WAB project WILL continue to dominate the "working on" numbers next month, as I have 100+ in progress now.

The Flea Market sell off went reasonably well, but I may have unintentionally skunked one of my other projects in doing so. With going on two years of little to no progress on that particular project, selling off most of the waiting minis for it may be a good thing, but we'll see.

The convention and flea market rendered up a few purchases as well, but they are not fully inventoried and a few things may be heading to other people. As such, the purchases will be reported for September.

The Pledge - July 2008

Thanks to the 15mm WAB project that I and several of the folks at the FLGS embarked upon this month, my purchase goal is currently blown. Painting continues to go reasonably well, though this month will see a fall due to the same project.

July numbers:
(Bought, sold, and primed numbers stand alone, while the progress and finished lists are mutually exclusive)

Bought (176)
-8 GW plastic Dark Elf Warriors
-2 Warmachine mercs (Orin Midwinter, Stannis Brocker)
-4 GW Empire (Cannon/Mortar w 3 crew)
-1 WestWind Frau Pain
-1 Dark Age Prevailer (Lilith LE)
-1 Dark Age Grafter (Saint Johann)
-1 FOW Honey Stuart tank
-50 OG15 Saxon Peasants
-50 OG15 Saxon Spearmen
-36 SLM 15mm Early Saxons
-22 Minifigs 15mm Franks

SOLD (3)

Primed (183)

Painting Progress (105)

Finished (66)
-2 Battletech
-1 LotR Mordor Uruk
-4 Warmachine Cryx
-3 GW Bretonnian Peasant Archers
-3 Gripping Beast "Swine"
-3 Stonehouse 15mm deadfall
-50 OG15 Saxon Peasants

This brings the YTD numbers to
Net Growth: +398
Painted: 231

398 growth/213 days = 1.868 minis per day.
231 painted/398 bought = 58.0% of growth painted.

Which is behind the purchase goal (<1.5 per day) but still barely ahead of the painting goal (>50% painted).

Existing project progress was limited. Warmachine and Battletech projects moved slowly forward, as did the WFB goal.

The 15mm WAB project will dominate the painting numbers next month, as I have 80+ in late stages and another 20 in early stages of painting or just primed. The above numbers don't include the armies of the other players, since I did all the ordering for the entire project. Those have all gone to their respective players, so there are 275 Vikings and 180-odd Franks and Lombards that passed through my hands this month. I decided to leave those numbers out since they wash anyway and they were never part of "my" collection.

I am now eyeing the piles of minis with the next convention flea market (at the end of August) and/or eBay in mind. Time to trim down with an eye on the Pledge goal for the year…

"Project Goals"?

My Pledge posts mention project goals. They're posted on the TMP on an annual basis. At the moment...

Project List 2008:
1. WFB Dogs of War:1,500 pts plus options.
2. WFB: two other armies to "minimum forcelist" (2 core, 1 other, 1 character)
3. WAB OG Rus: 1,000 pts.
4. FoW North Africa Brits "super-company".
5. A (possibly "short") platoon of Her Majesty's Star Marine Scouts with transport.
6. Two 500 pt Rezolution crews.
7. One 500 pt Dark Age band.
8. Two 500 pt Warmachine/Hordes battlegroups.
9. All Classic Battletech in the collection (which isn't much, but hey)
10. Finish (Brigade) AmRep Fleet
11. Terrain for 1-5 & 9; at least a signature piece or two.
12. Rescue the other rooms in the house from the "lead creep".

At the moment, #8 has been attained, #9 would have been if I hadn't kept buying, and #12 is largely a lost cause.
Goal #2 has actually seen a lot of scattered "progress" this year, but no single army has seen the goal reached.

The advent of a new project in July isn't helping, but it may be a done deal in the next few days, so I'm not hugely worried. That said, the purchase side of my Pledge has been blown out of the water. More on that on the 31st...

And Another...

N. Robin Crossby, creator of Harn roleplaying world and rules, died on July 24th.

The Pledge - June 2008

Not a bad month, but with a bit more slippage in the purchase goal. Painting continues to go well.

June numbers:
(Bought, sold, and primed numbers stand alone, while the progress and finished lists are mutually exclusive)

Bought (78)
-16 Battletech mechs and vehicles
-4 GW Mounted Daemonettes (metal)
-6 GW Savage Orcs
-1 GW Savage Orc Boar Boy
-5 GW plastic Gnoblars
-1 GW Ogryn Bonehead
-10 GW plastic Skeletons
-4 Warmachine Cryx
-11 Warmachine Mercs
-4 Hordes Trollbloods
-14 Gripping Beast "Swine"
-8 Megamini Traveller Newts

SOLD (18)

Primed (77)

Painting Progress (48)

Finished (42)
-8 GW Chaos Dwarfs
-8 Battletech
-17 GW Bretonnians
-2 Warmachine Cygnar (2 Defender Warjacks)
-6 Warmachine Cryx (6 Bile Thralls)
-1 Reaper Wereboar

This brings the YTD numbers to
Net Growth: +225
Painted: 165

225 growth/182 days = 1.236 minis per day.
165 painted/225 bought = 73.3% of growth painted.

Which is ahead of both Pledge goals (<1.5 per day, >50% painted), but slipping, at least on the purchase side…

Project progress was limited. Warmachine took another jump this month despite already passing the annual goal. The general WFB goal advanced a bit, but in a very scattered way. The Battletech project goal continues to go sideways, with expansion of the collection more than keeping up with the completed rate. Critical mass has been reached, for the most part, however.

I continue to want to put attention on the Warhammer and Dark Age goals, as well as Battletech. I suspect I will also add a bit more to the Warmachine finished collection, as there are still a couple things calling my name.

Another One Passes

Roleplaying game designer Erick Wujcik passed away Saturday evening, June 7, 2008. He died from complications related to pancreatic and liver cancer.

Two products define Erick's design career. He wrote the TMNT RPG for Palladium, and the Amber Diceless RPG which he published himself (as Phage Press). While I hold the TMNT game in high regard, I've played a lot of Amber Diceless in the past 15 years.

Following the deaths of Gary Gygax (one of the primary creators of D&D) and Bob Bledsaw (the principal of Judges Guild) in 2007, this is quite a blow to the hobby.

D&D 4th Edition

Bleh.

Mechanically this might be a lot of fun, but "D&D" it ain't.

The Pledge - Update May 2008

May numbers:

Bought (136)
-66 GW Empire
-2 GW Bretonnians (plastic archers)
-4 GW High Elf Phoenix Guard
-19 Battletech mechs
-6 Battletech vehicles
-1 wrecked GW Land Raider for terrain or orks
-5 Blue Moon Plutonian Infantry
-8 Warmachine/Hordes (3x Cygnar Stormsmiths, 2x Cryx Satyxis, 1 Menoth Vassal, 2 Skorne Beast Handlers)
-4 Dark Age Forsaken (Nathaniel, Orchid, 2x Haniel)
-1 Dark Age Skarrd (Abomiation)
-1 Mekton mini (conversion?)
-3 Foundry Mercenary Orcs
-4 plastic unnamed robots
-5 GW Assault Marines
-1 CAV RMI Bishop
-2 Wargods Harbingers (Horus/Def., Khanum)
-1 Countess Games Cleric of Helios
-3 Gamezone Empire Pikemen

SOLD (10)

Primered (57)

Painting Progress (18)

Finished (47)
-10 GW Empire (10 Handgunners)
-5 Battletech Inf
-17 Battletech mechs
-10 Battletech vehicles
-2 JR 1/300 Storage bldgs
-3 plastic unnamed robots (based and painted for Battletech)

This brings the YTD numbers to
Net Growth: +165
Painted: 123

165 growth/152 days = 1.085 minis per day.
123 painted/165 bought = 74.5% of growth painted.

Which is ahead of both Pledge goals (<1.5 per day, >50% painted), though I am sliding…

Project progress was limited. The Battletech project goal is going decidedly sideways, with expansion of the collection keeping up with the completed rate. I feel critical mass approaching, however, so the expansion is all but complete.

The big Warhammer Empire purchase was a bargain I couldn't pass up, and accounts for half of May's growth. The miniatures are being processed for conversion and/or sell-off, however, so they will be departing the collection again at some point, maybe sooner than later…

Looking to get attention in June are the Warhammer and Dark Age goals, as well as Battletech. I may also add a bit more to the Warmachine finished collection, as there are several items there hovering near completion.

The Pledge

Plain and simple, I have a huge pile of miniatures to paint, and I keep buying more. Last year, I resolved to take two steps along the path to dealing with this "problem". First, I began tracking purchases, and secondly I began to paint more. The first step was facilitated by what The Miniatures Page (http://theminiaturespage.com/) calls "The Pledge", as I began not only keeping track, but posting my monthly purchases, as well as painting progress and items finished.

My FLGS helped with this second step, as I've found that I am far more productive when surrounded by gamer chatter.

With a fairly astounding purchase total in 2007, I resolved to actually limit my purchases in 2008, and try to sell off stuff I wasn't going to ever get to. In my case "limit" means keeping collection growth down to about 500 or so for the year, and painting half of that.

My Pledge posts on TMP continue, but I've decided to echo them here, starting with the May 2008 post.

Cold and angry...

A Winter Troll from Hordes, by Privateer Press. I need a new photo against a background that doesn't make him look like a Tron escapee...

And here's a blurry one. Gotta recharge my camera's battery again and get some good pics.

Yup, those are the same mini. Lighting and photo tweaking have their dangers...

Woof!

Broodhounds and "Sawblades" from Dark Age.

And now for techno-vampire-zombie-whatevers
